For Christians, Christmas is not first a season of busyness. It is the remembrance of a birth: that God came among us as a child, born in Bethlehem, and laid in a manger.

The prophet Isaiah foretold it centuries before: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

And Luke records how it came to pass: "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn." (Luke 2:7)

A king born in a stable. Good news announced first to shepherds. A star that guided travellers from far away. It is a story of humility, wonder and hope, and it is the reason many of us keep Christmas at all.

## Why Christmas matters

The angel's message to the shepherds is the heart of it: "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:11)

That is the news the season is for. Gifts, gatherings and holidays are good things, but they point beyond themselves. For those who believe, Christmas is the celebration that God kept his promise, and that peace and goodwill were offered to everyone.

## A small, quiet witness

Most of us will never preach a sermon. But almost all of us write email, every day, to colleagues, customers, friends and neighbours.

Each of those messages carries a signature. It is a small space, and usually an unremarkable one: a name, a title, a phone number. In the weeks of Advent, it can also be a gentle and respectful reminder of what you are celebrating.

A signature does not argue or insist. It simply sits at the foot of an ordinary message and says, quietly, what matters to you. For some recipients it will be a welcome encouragement. For others it will pass without comment, and that is perfectly fine. It is an invitation, never a demand.

## Twelve Nativity templates

We have prepared twelve signature templates for the season. Each one is reverent and understated, with artwork drawn especially for SigMonster, and each is different in colour, typeface and layout, so you can choose the one that suits you or your organisation.

- **Nativity Star of Bethlehem** is a deep blue card with a golden star, carrying the words of the Magi from Matthew 2:2.
- **Nativity Stable and Manger** is a warm parchment card with a humble stable, in remembrance of where the Saviour was laid.
- **Nativity Holy Family** is an indigo night with the soft silhouette of Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus.
- **Nativity Shepherds** shows dark green hills and a shepherd watching his flock by night, with the angel's words, "Fear not" (Luke 2:10).
- **Nativity Angels** is a bright, airy card with a winged angel and the song of the heavenly host: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:14)
- **Nativity Magi** is a royal purple and gold card with the wise men on camels, following the star to worship the child.
- **Nativity Advent Candle** is a single lit candle on Advent purple, for the season of waiting and hope.
- **Nativity Dove** is a clean white card with a dove carrying an olive branch, wishing peace on earth.
- **Nativity Stained Glass** frames a jewel-coloured window with a star at its heart.
- **Nativity Chi-Rho** is a cream and burgundy card with the ancient Chi-Rho monogram of Christ between Alpha and Omega, with John 1:1.
- **Nativity Bethlehem Night** places a starry sky over the quiet hills of Bethlehem, with Luke 2:11 beneath.
- **Nativity Illuminated Manuscript** is an aged-parchment page in the manner of a medieval manuscript, with a gilded capital and John 1:14.

Scripture on the templates is taken from the King James Version. Where a template carries a verse, its reference is given alongside it. The others carry a simple greeting.

## Sharing a template across your organisation

If you look after signatures for a church, a school, a charity or a business where people would like to share this greeting, SigMonster makes it a small job.

Choose a Nativity template, apply it to your organisation, and everyone's signature is updated at once, with each person's own name, role and contact details filled in. No one has to copy and paste anything. Of course, no one should feel obliged to use it: people can keep their usual signature, and when the season is over you can switch back just as easily.

The Nativity templates are available now and remain until the Epiphany in early January.

## A blessing

Whether you keep Christmas with a candlelit service, a quiet table with family, or a day of rest after a long year, we hope you will find something in it that is peaceful.

"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people." (Luke 2:10)

May you have a blessed Advent and a joyful Christmas, from all of us at SigMonster.
